Bowen and Bowen adjusts handling fees for the Cayes; announces beer shortages

On May 6th, Bowen and Bowen issued two separate press releases announcing an increase in handling fees for their products distributed in Caye Caulker and San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. The company, which distributes beverages and other products, also reported a temporary disruption in beer supply following an unexpected power outage on May 5th. This outage stressed their control system, leading to equipment failure and affecting beer production in glass bottles.

Downtown businesses report a slow crowd for Easter

Entrepreneurs in downtown San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, have observed that the popular Easter celebrations on the island are changing. According to some business owners who spoke about the recent Easter weekend, the once-crowded downtown and beach parties along the eastern coast seem to be fading. They noted that more visitors are now gravitating toward the popular Secret Beach on the island's northwest side or other destinations in the country.

Postmortem rules Selvin Sealy’s death as homicide, family demands answers

On Saturday, May 17th, Selvin Sealy Jr., 32, was laid to rest in San Pedro Town. The island resident died in police custody after he was apprehended for tresing on private property south of San Pedro earlier in the week. While family are questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, police on the island say the matter is under investigation, and a file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further advice.

American who hijacked plane in Belize was trying to reach Texas

On Thursday, April 17th, the country was shocked when a Cessna 208EX Grand Caravan carrying 14 engers, including a child, belonging to Tropic Air, was hijacked by a man wielding a knife. The hijacker, Akinyela Taylor, a 49-year-old U.S. citizen, demanded that the pilot take the plane out of the country, specifically to Texas, USA. His demands were not met, and during the ordeal, three individuals were injured. Taylor was ultimately shot and killed by one of the engers upon landing at the Philip Goldson International Airport.

San Pedro man detained for alleged bigamy

On Wednesday, February 5th, San Pedro Police formally arrested and charged 61-year-old Edermillo Javier Azebedo, also known as Edermillo Javier Garcia, with the crime of Bigamy. This arrest followed a complaint from his first wife, who alleges that he secretly married another woman while still legally married to her.

Communication Training for Families and Teachers held in San Pedro

On Wednesday, May 14th, a children’s communication training workshop was held at San Pedro High School. The workshop was organized through a collaborative effort between Therapy Abroad, students from the University of Houston, Texas, USA, and the San Pedro Town Council. The initiative was part of Therapy Abroad’s Communication Sciences & Disorders program, which aims to provide hands-on clinical experience in speech-language pathology while delivering essential services to underserved communities.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve Opens Marine Education Center

On Wednesday, May 14th, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve officially opened its new Marine Education Center, located on the ground floor of its headquarters in downtown San Pedro. The long-anticipated event welcomed a diverse group of attendees, including primary school students, representatives from the Belize Tourism Board, tour guides, local leaders, and specially invited guests. The highlight of the event was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which marked the official opening of the education center to both guests and the public.

Youth Football Tournament Heads to Finals

Next week, a new champion will be crowned in the Youth Football Tournament finals at Ambergris Stadium. Following the second leg of the semi-finals held on May 16th, Barca and Real Madrid in the U-15 category secured their spots in the championship match. In the U-17 division, Team Real Madrid and Man City earned their places in the showdown.

2025 Belize Premier Basketball League Begins; San Pedro Tiger Sharks Net First Win

Basketball season has returned to Belize, and San Pedro’s very own Tiger Sharks proudly represent the island in the national tournament. The Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL) tipped off on Friday, May 16th, and continued into Saturday with three exciting games. The San Pedro Tiger Sharks secured a solid win during the opening weekend and are now preparing for their second match on Saturday, May 24th, at the Civic Center in Belize City.

San Pedro Celebrates Moms in Style: Bretha Graniel awarded Mother of the Year

On Saturday, May 10th, the San Pedro Town Council organized a spectacular Mother’s Day Extravaganza at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas Field). The event transformed the venue into a lively hub filled with love, laughter, and entertainment, running from 6PM until 3 AM. The community came together to celebrate and honor the amazing mothers. A highlight of the evening was the award for Mother of the Year, which was presented to Bertha Graniel.

The San Pedro Marching Bands entertains island community during appreciation show

On Saturday, April 26th, the San Pedro Town Council hosted the highly anticipated Marching Bands Appreciation Show at Ambergris Stadium. This event was organized to honor the contributions of the marching bands from San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) and San Pedro High School (SPHS) to the community spirit. It attracted large crowds of residents and visitors alike, who paid a small ission fee of $3, which was donated to the bands.
