Coronado Public Library Hosts National Ambassador For Young People’s Literature 3k3a24

The Coronado Public Library recently hosted author Mac Barnett, the 2025-2026 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. As part of the “Behold, the Picture Book!” theme that Barnett has chosen as his focus in his role as Ambassador, he read aloud from a selection of books and spoke to the joys and importance of picture books.

The May 20 Coronado City Council meeting began with two ceremonial proclamations recognizing May as National Bike Month and as Older Americans Month. The Council also heard a presentation from Coronado’s Citizen Representative of Sharp Coronado, Mike Woiwode, with an update on Sharp Coronado operations. Woiwode highlighted the hospital’s Primary Stroke Center certification, the remodel of the Intensive Care Unit, the expansion of the Emergency Department (with a remodel of the entrance currently underway), and the hospital’s robotic da Vinci Surgical System.

During the City Manager’s update, Tina Friend highlighted the recent Avenue of Heroes ceremony. She also provided an update on the status of some ongoing projects. The Cays Park playground equipment has been delivered, and the City is working on getting an installer. The Parker Pump Station is anticipated to be completed this fall. This spring, students in Arrielle Luna’s Sports Medicine Capstone class at Coronado High School had the unique opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a professional healthcare setting through a hands-on internship at Sharp Coronado Hospital.

As the No.1 seed in the CIF DII bracket, the Coronado Islanders baseball program was viewed as the odds on favorite to capture the CIF DII title. 

And while the boys in green and white do find themselves in the CIF semifinals, they also find themselves back in a corner. After dropping their round two game to Mt. Carmel, the Islanders will need two consecutive victories over Mt. Carmel on Tuesday and Wednesday if they want to punch their ticket to the DII championship game.

The multi-year Coronado Newspaper Project of the Coronado Public Library and the California Digital Newspaper Collection at the University of California Riverside is complete. Coronado’s newspapers from 1887 through 2013 are now available on the web.

The newspapers are fully searchable by subject, keyword, linked words and dates, and search results bring up articles or full pages of the newspapers. Images of specific articles can also be retrieved. Researchers and people with any interest level can look up stories, businesses, homes they lived in, obituaries, sports, and even ads.
