Haitians with HIV defy stigma as they publicly denounce USAID cuts and dwindling medication 12gb
Haitians with HIV are defying stigma as they publicly denounce USAID cuts implemented by the istration of U.S. President Donald Trump that has led to a dwindling of life-saving medication. More than 150,000 people in Haiti have HIV or AIDS, although the number is believed to be much higher. At least five clinics, including one that served 2,500 patients, have been forced to close after the U.S. slashed more than 90% of USAID’s foreign aid contracts and $60 billion in overall aid across the globe. Experts say Haiti could see a surge in infections because medications are dwindling at a time that gang violence and poverty are surging.
